The steps to the top front garden at Itchy Palms Gardens were looking quite sad after the relentless hot summer that has just passed. This picture shows them before summer but recently most of the grass had burnt off or died. After the generous gift of some beautiful rocks we decided to revamp the mondo grass into stone steps. The step risers were actually treated pine posts with mondo grass planted close to the posts and the platform of each step was compacted sand. I loved them as the grass gave them a soft lush feel. There just wasn't enough cover to protect the grass from our summer heat. It took a lot of effort to disassemble them as the pine posts were held in place by steel star pickets that had been pounded into the ground at least 60cm. Once the demolishing was complete Paul started plotting out what rocks would go where. Happy with the placement we set off with the old trailer to get some sand and cement for the project. As you can see below I mix a good mortar in the barrow and Paul is project manager and chief builder. Almost finished. Just a little work left adjusting the drainage grate so the it lines up in the middle. I am so happy with the result. Thanks Paul.

I am planning to put up two mulberry espaliers at the front of our Strawberry Fields Garden on the western flank of our block. We already have one very successful one near our vegetable patch but there are never enough mulberries in the summer!
These espaliers will be a pigeon pair with an arch way separating them. I've already bought the trees and they both have two long leaders that I will be able to fan out so they will hopefully grow vertical branches from. Now all I have to do is motivate Paul to put the wire frames up on posts. The arches will be made from some sections of old round trampoline frames we purchased from the local recycle yards. Pics will follow. Am so excited! Cheers. |
